The trick is to just to mount the lens backwards. To do this you can buy plastic "reversing rings" that screw on to the end of the lens where a filter would normally go. The reversing ring has a bayonet mount that allows you to mount the lens to your camera. There are some pros: cheap, works OK, very high magnification. Some cons: you need to get close, you lose auto focus and auto everything really!
Still the results are good enough if you don't want to invest in a real macro lens.
For this photo I used a Canon 550d, reversing ring, 18-55 kit lens set at 55mm.
Thanks for the trick. I tried the adapter on my DSLR with the same configuration, and it did great macro shots on microscopic nature. A tripod is needed to get still images, event in light conditions.
